Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum that produces flaccid paralysis. The toxin causes the disease botulism. The seven main types of botulinum toxin are named types A to G. Types A and B are used in medicine.
Botulinum toxin type A (Botox, Dysport) are injections and are primarily known for the treatment and prevention of wrinkles. In Neurology are used to treat conditions such as: chronic migraine (Botox), several types of dystonia (blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, cervical dystonia), and muscle spasticity (for example after ischemic stroke). Getting Botox or Dysport takes a few minutes. The doctor uses a small needle to inject into specific muscles, it takes 7 to 14 days to take full effect which lasts 3 to 6 months. Both Botox and Dysport are considered safe, common but temporary side effects can include slight pain and numbness at the site of the injection. No hospitalization is required and you can leave immediately after treatment.
